The Google Business Profile checklist every Valley business needs

The Google Business Profile checklist every Valley business needs

Quick answer: A strong Google Business Profile is verified, fully filled out, accurate and active. That means the right primary category, correct hours and contact details, a clear description, your services listed, real photos, regular updates and replies to every review. Work through the checklist below once, then spend a few minutes on it each week.

When someone in Phoenix searches "coffee near me" or asks Google's AI for a recommendation, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see. It shows your hours, photos, reviews and a button to call or get directions.

Here is the checklist we use when we sit down with owners across the Valley.

The basics

1. Claim and verify your profile

If you have not verified your profile, start here. Unverified profiles are limited and easier for others to suggest edits to. Google offers a few verification methods, such as a video recording, a phone call or text, or email, depending on your business. Follow the steps Google shows you in your dashboard.

2. Use your real business name

Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your sign and paperwork. Do not add extra keywords like "Best Plumber Mesa" to the name. Google's guidelines do not allow it, and it can get your profile suspended.

3. Get your address or service area right

If customers come to you, like a Scottsdale med spa or a Tempe auto shop, list your address. If you go to customers, like a Gilbert pool service or a Chandler house cleaner, set a service area and hide your address. Pick the cities and areas you truly serve.

4. Match your phone, website and hours everywhere

Your phone number, website link and hours should match your website and other listings exactly. Add special hours for holidays so customers do not show up to a locked door.

Categories and services

5. Choose the most accurate primary category

Your primary category is one of the most important settings on your profile. Choose the one that best describes your core business. A dental office should pick "Dentist" or a more specific option like "Pediatric dentist" if it fits.

6. Add relevant secondary categories

Add a few secondary categories for other things you genuinely offer. Skip anything that is a stretch. Accuracy beats volume.

7. List your services or products

Fill in the services section with the specific things you do, in plain words customers would use. A landscaper might list desert landscaping, irrigation repair and tree trimming as separate items. This helps Google and AI tools match you to specific searches.

8. Add the attributes that apply

Attributes include things like wheelchair accessible, outdoor seating, or online appointments. Pick the ones that are true for your business. They help you show up for customers filtering by those details.

Content that builds trust

9. Write a clear business description

You get up to 750 characters. Say what you do, who you serve and where, in natural language. Mention the Arizona cities you serve without stuffing in keywords. Leave out links and promotions, since Google does not allow those in the description.

10. Upload real photos, and keep adding them

Add your logo, a cover photo, your storefront, your team and your work. Real photos beat stock images. For a service area business, before and after shots of your work are great.

11. Post updates

Google lets you share updates, offers and events on your profile. A quick post about a new service, a seasonal special or a community event shows you are active.

Reviews

12. Get a steady flow of real reviews

Reviews are one of the biggest factors in how customers choose. Aim for a steady stream rather than a burst. Our guide on how to get more Google reviews without awkwardly asking covers easy ways to do it the right way.

13. Reply to every review

Thank people for positive reviews, ideally with a personal detail. Respond to negative reviews calmly and offer to make it right offline. Future customers read your replies.

Keep it current

14. Check your profile regularly

Anyone can suggest edits to your profile, and Google sometimes updates details on its own. Log in regularly to catch changes and confirm everything is still correct.

15. Link your profile to a strong website

Your profile works best when it points to a fast website with clear service pages. If your site is slow or vague, customers may bounce. See the common website mistakes that cost you customers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to see results after updating my profile?

It varies. Some changes, like hours and photos, show up quickly. Improvements in how often you appear in searches tend to build over weeks or months as reviews and activity add up.

Can I have more than one profile?

Only if you have separate physical locations that serve customers in person, each with its own staffed address. Creating extra profiles for the same business or for virtual offices goes against Google's guidelines.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI search?

Yes, it plays a role. Google's own AI answers draw on Google Maps and Business Profile data, and other assistants look at many of the same public details. A complete, accurate profile helps everywhere.
